What is WEEE?
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulation became a European Law in February 2003, which was designed to address the environmental impact of waste and electronic equipment sold by retailers and distributors across the UK. It ensures that the products are recycled using the best treatment available to sustain human health and increase environmental protection. This system allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin.
Why is WEEE important?
All electrical waste contains harmful chemicals that are extremely dangerous to the environment. If a product containing electrical chemicals is dumped in landfills, the product will gradually decay, releasing toxins into the soil, air and our water systems. This will lead to the harmful toxins affecting our food chain and eventually, into our body. Furthermore, any government bodies are required to dispose their electrical waste in the correct manner and failing to do so can result in a heart-breaking £5,000 fine. If this is ignored, it may lead to further consequences.
